It would take FBI paranormal-specialist Fox Mulder, David Duchovny's uniquely insightful "X-Files" character, to make sense out of the actor's first post-stardom movie, "Playing God." But even he, too, might qualify it as beyond belief.
This muddled, rambling movie can't decide if it wants to be a character study about an on-the-skids ex-doctor finding himself; a film noir about a flawed good guy caught in a bad situation; or a Quentin Tarantino-style crime romp where everyone sooner or later pulls out a gun and sprays bullets. What's more, it does a poor job at each.
"Playing God" should have stuck with the character study. Duchovny is completely ...
