John Coltrane remains such a major influence that it's difficult to believe he died 30 years ago. Traditional young jazz players copy his 1956 style, and avant-gardists are inspired by his 1960s experiments.
The 30th anniversary of Trane's death has been marked by Impulse Records with the release of a four-CD set, "John Coltrane: The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings," containing material from his Nov. 2-5, 1961, appearances at the club.
Almost four albums of material from those sessions have been issued; only three tracks are new.
