Large doses of vitamin E can slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease, keeping patients out of nursing homes for about seven months and improving their capacities for daily activities by about 25 percent, an important study has found.
"It is the first time we've been able to show we can influence the course of Alzheimer's disease," said Dr. John Growdon, a neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a co-author of the study.
The government-funded study also found benefits from taking a prescription drug, Selegiline, but found that taking the two in combination was less effective than taking either alone.
