Article: High-speed Northeast train is on fast track.

In three years, commuters will be able to get on a new high-speed Amtrak electric train at South Station and be in downtown Manhattan in less than three hours.

From Manhattan, it's only another two hours and 45 minutes to Washington, D.C., and this train will eliminate hunting for taxis, trips to the airport and delays once you're there.

"It will be the safest train in the world," said Peter Stangel, president of the Bombardier Transit Corp. which is building the new American Flyer to run along the Northeast Corridor.

Stangel said the cost of the project will be $754 million and it will be America's first high-speed track system.
