Mob scene storms March sale for watercolor
Blackwood March attracted what auctioneer Michael March described as "a mob" to its Jan. 20 auction in Ipswich, where an 1818 watercolor of a ship under sail by Antoine Roux brought $4,620 from a Maine collector.
Emile Gruppe's "Morning Birches," which came from a Topsfield collector, brought $4,190. A Georgian silver basket, featuring a reticulated handle made in London in 1766 by Edward Aldridge, brought $2,530, and a 19th-century English barometer was $550.
March was surprised when a Shirvan prayer rug brought a hearty $2,200 and a 1723 newspaper published in Boston by Benjamin Franklin ...
