For most English-speaking foreign filmmakers, an international and Oscar success such as "The Piano" usually means entree into Hollywood. But not for New Zealander Jane Campion, who won a screenplay Oscar for that movie. She didn't want a ticket to Hollywood.
For her "Piano" follow-up, Campion has made "The Portrait of a Lady," an adaptation of Henry James' 19th century novel about headstrong expatriate American Isabel Archer (Nicole Kidman), who finds her will smothered after marrying mysterious Gilbert Osmond (John Malkovich). The success of "The Piano" didn't affect Campion's choice of material or increase her desire to take any Hollywood offers.
