Ten years ago, when bread machines first appeared on the market, bakers were aghast at the thought of a mechanical device producing first-rate bread.
Bread purists eschewed the simplicity of the new appliance, dismissing it as a passing fad and preferring instead to connect fist to dough.
Just a decade later, the machines can be found in the homes of some of the country's top bakers. And bread machines, now a kitchen staple, are mentioned in the same breath as microwave ovens, food processors and toaster ovens.
