PITTSBURGH - He is the blue-collar quarterback in a blue-collar town on a blue-collar team with a blue-collar coach, but when the 1996 season started, Mike Tomczak wasn't even Bill Cowher's favorite quarterback.
It was the immortal Jim Miller who won the three-way preseason battle to inherit the mantle of the departed Neil O'Donnell. Miller was sufficiently awful in the season-opening 24-9 loss to Jacksonville that the following week Cowher opted to start Tomczak while he figured out what to do next. He's still waiting.
