I read "Planned Breech Homebirth" in the Winter '97 issue of Special Delivery: Zoey Helenske did not have an "unassisted" homebirth. She was assisted by her partner and also her good friend.
Every time a homebirth story -- without a midwife present -- is published in any periodical, there is always a disclaimer, usually from the editor or owner, saying that births without a medical person or midwife present are not recommended or condoned. This is not just a legal point; it seems to be the general consensus.
Midwives tell women birth is "as safe as life gets," that they should trust their bodies, that they should use alternatives to analgesics, that ...
