Breast cancer mortality is decreasing in the United States, as well as in other industrialized countries such as Canada, Austria and the United Kingdom.[1] However, as many as 176 300 new cases of breast cancer are predicted for 1999,[2] ensuring that breast cancer will maintain its position as the leading cause of new cancer cases in women in the United States. While data indicate that breast cancer mortality is decreasing in some industrialized countries, other European countries such as Spain, Portugal, Greece, Hungary, Poland and Italy have not reported favorable trends. Interestingly, the lowest breast cancer mortality rates continue to be reported in Asian regions.
