BOSTON - This time, there were no umpires for the Boston Red Sox to blame. And chalking this loss up to a supposed curse would reveal a serious case of denial.
Last night at Fenway Park the Red Sox lost to the New York Yankees because they couldn't hit in the clutch and because their rotation was too shallow to allow it to send out a capable starter with their season on the line.
Hence, the Yankees won Game 5 of the American League Championship Series 6-1 and clinched their 36th AL pennant by winning the series 4-1. New York will face either the Atlanta Braves or their crosstown rivals, the Mets, in the World Series beginning Saturday.
