Marie Rudisill, a noted cook from Alabama and aunt of Truman Capote, blissfully recalls "the queen of cakes." Her recollection appears in A Gracious Plenty by John T Edge, a new cookbook celebrating Southern food, which also includes this most traditional recipe.
Today, people just don't know what real fruitcake is. The abominations they try and pass off as fruitcake are, quite frankly, horrible. When I was growing up, we loved them. They were the queen of cakes!
