The transcontinental railroad is a cornerstone of Canadian history dating back to confederation. For many provinces, its construction was a condition for their entry into confederation. Aside from the railroad's romantic history and associated nostalgia, it is not just a relic of the gilded age. The modern Canadian rail network continues to play a significant role in North American trade.
