October is the perfect hiking month: The air is cool and dry, the crowds are long gone and so are the black flies and mosquitoes.
Those seeking to match great hiking weather with great terrain might want to consider Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts and home to a 50-mile network of trails. Rising in the northwest corner of the state near the Berkshire towns of Lanesboro, North Adams and Williams, the mountain is the centerpiece of the 12,500-acre Mount Greylock State Reservation.
