America's Roman Catholic bishops aren't much for political slogans. But their quadrennial statement on election-year issues, to be released by the United States Catholic Conference this week, is a reminder that they were mixing compassion with conservatism long before it was cool. The statement, "Faithful Citizenship: Civic Responsibility for a New Millennium," stakes out the bishops' familiar positions on issues like abortion (strongly pro-life) and education (parental choice), while pleading for greater benefits for immigrants, affordable health care for all and debt relief for poor countries.
