Midway through Chick Flicks, B. Ruby Rich's gossipy, smart memoir about the birth of the feminist film scene, Rich quotes an unnamed filmmaker attending the 1979 Edinburgh Feminism and Film conference who said, "I want to learn to make films that will be infinitely pleasurable for women and profoundly threatening to men." In a sense, Rich tries to do the same thing for film criticism, bringing pleasure to women who long to see their concerns reflected on screen, and regarding the male-dominated alternative cinema with well-informed skepticism.
