More than half of all members of the US Senate and House of Representatives have become co-sponsors of legislation that would end time the limitation on Medicare coverage of immunosuppressive drugs needed by transplant recipients, according to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). Currently, Medicare covers the cost of the drugs for the first 3 years after a transplant.
The Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage Act, introduced into the 106th Congress last March by Rep. Charles Canaday (R-FL) and Rep. Karen Thurman (R-FL) has attracted more than 256 co-sponsors. Sen. Mike DeWine (R-OH) introduced similar legislation which has 21 co-sponsors.
