For many music lovers, the most surprising thing about the nomination of Andre Previn as a 1998 Kennedy Center Honoree is that it took so long.
For decades, the versatile Mr. Previn, 69, an award-winning composer of music for stage and screen as well as a distinguished classical artist, has been a fixture in both the American and international music scenes. He regularly has conducted the most renowned chamber and symphony orchestras in the world, has performed frequently as a pianist in chamber music and jazz ensembles and is a prolific recording artist, author and television personality.
