In 1956, the Stanislavsky Ballet danced in Paris, becoming the first ballet company from the Soviet Union to appear in the West. (The Bolshoi Ballet also appeared in London that same year.)
The company danced "Swan Lake," newly re-staged by its director, Vladimir Burmeister. His version of the ballet emphasized dramatic clarity: He inserted a prologue that showed Odette's transformation from a young girl into a Swan Queen, making the story understandable from the start. Mr. Burmeister's "Swan Lake" was so successful that he was invited back in 1960 to stage the work for the Paris Opera Ballet.
