PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - Offering new hope of peace in Cambodia, the country's warring political parties broke a three-month impasse yesterday, agreeing to form a coalition government led by strongman Hun Sen.
Under the plan, Hun Sen will be the sole prime minister. Opposition leader Prince Norodom Ranariddh will become president of the National Assembly, even though Hun Sen's party won a narrow majority in elections in July.
King Norodom Sihanouk announced the deal at the close of a two-day summit hastily convened at the monarch's palace after Prince Ranariddh agreed to return to Cambodia from self-exile and resume negotiations with Hun Sen.
