American Catholics will move a step closer to gaining one more saint with ties to their country when missionary Theodore Guerin is beatified by Pope John Paul II in Rome on Sunday.
Mother Guerin, a French native who died in 1856 in Indiana, will be one of only about 12 Catholics whose sainthood or beatification has an American connection.
She founded the oldest continuing Catholic liberal arts college for women, Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, and worked for the sick and needy.
"More than education, she is a woman for our times," said Sister Rosemary Brontrager, general secretary of the order, which has 650 members.
