LOS ANGELES - California Democrats Gray Davis and Barbara Boxer gave the national Democratic Party its biggest triumph of the election season, with early returns and exit polls indicating they won the governor's seat and the U.S. Senate race by large margins.
A strong turnout among Hispanics and women was the key to both triumphs - along with a seeming public indifference to the White House sex scandal.
Both President Clinton and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton raised large amounts of money for Mr. Davis, the state's lieutenant governor, and Mrs. Boxer, spending 13 days in the state since Labor Day.
