China had its own Vincent van Gogh.
Zhu Da (1626-1705), an expressive and often violent painter like Van Gogh, also suffered from severe mental anguish.
Descended from the Ming (1368-1644) imperial line, Zhu was forced into hiding when the Manchus swept down from Manchuria and established the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911).
Zhu, also known as Bada Shanren became a Zen Buddhist monk and created an individualistic and eccentric painting style that would change the course of Chinese art forever - much like Van Gogh's works did in the West.
