Several anomalies marked last night's state dinner in the White House for President Andres Pastrana of Colombia.
The 192 guests included fewer elected politicians and a wider range of artists than usual. After-dinner music ranged from opera to salsa.
Retiring Arkansas Sen. Dale Bumpers and Colombian-born Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez were among those who had the most words with President Clinton in the receiving line.
And D.C. Mayor Marion Barry, with wife Cora Masters Barry, attending their first state dinner, arrived on time.
