The Southern African Development Community (SADC), created primarily as an organization to foster regional economic growth, has suddenly emerged as a peacekeeper seeking to ensure security and stability in the region.
In the past two months, SADC has authorized armed interventions in two countries, Congo and Lesotho, with considerable success.
"This is the first time we've done anything on this scale," said SADC Executive Secretary Kaire Mbuende in a recent interview with The Washington Times.
He strongly defended both interventions as "actions in support of established and recognized governments."
