Article: Senator vows to pursue labeling of meat sources.(Business)

A U.S. senator vowed yesterday to keep pushing his proposal to require country-of-origin labels for beef and lamb sold in stores.

House and Senate members negotiating a compromise 1999 agriculture spending bill dropped Sen. Tim Johnson's Senate-backed meat labeling plan Monday night due to objections from some House members. They agreed, instead, to language calling for a study of the costs and benefits of his proposal.

Mr. Johnson, South Dakota Democrat, told reporters yesterday that he isn't satisfied with a study and may try to attach his legislation to another bill before Congress adjourns for the year.
