Dennis McKinley Dolinger spent most of his life fighting crimes. Stephen Craig Watson spent much of his life committing them.
But police say when their paths crossed a week ago, Mr. Dolinger was left lying in a pool of blood from stab wounds to his head.
Police are trying to piece together the puzzle of how the two men met and what led to the killing.
"Dennis was the sort of person who was very friendly with a whole range of people from all walks of life," said Beth Purcell, 49, a friend of five years who lives around the corner from Mr. Dolinger's home.
