If FIDE, the international chess federation, is to be trusted (and that's not always the case), America's strongest player will be coming out of hibernation to play in the world championship knockout tournament later this month in Las Vegas. Gata Kamsky of Brooklyn, N.Y., who gave up the game after losing a title match to FIDE champ Anatoly Karpov in 1995, is seeded fourth in the 100-player tournament set to begin July 26. Kamsky had been studying medicine for four years and had given no public indication that he was getting back into the game.
