STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. - We were sitting in a boat in the upper portions of the local Potomac Creek when bass and striper fishing guide Dale Knupp pointed toward a sandy spit by a marsh bank, picked up a spinning rod that had been rigged with a dark-red plastic worm and sent it flying through the late-morning air. The imitation worm landed in less than two feet of water. As it descended to the bottom, the line from the guide's rod suddenly moved violently from the target area, a strong wake clearly signifying that a fish had held onto the fake bait.
"That has to be a 6-pound bass, maybe bigger!" I shouted, but Knupp only laughed, his rod sharply bent, line ...
