Gabriel E. Mallides, 73, broadcaster and writer for the Arabic-language service of Voice of America, died of cancer May 30 at Montgomery General Hospital.
Mr. Mallides was born to Greek parents in Baghdad. He graduated from the American University of Beirut, with a bachelor of arts degree. Afterward he worked as a press assistant at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
He married Elizabeth Vallance, an American colleague at the embassy in 1959. The same year they came to Washington when the embassy was closed by the Iraqi revolution.
