Vice President Al Gore now says he served his country proudly during his six months as an Army soldier in Vietnam although he clearly was a reluctant soldier at the time.
Upon announcing his presidential candidacy at the Smith County Courthouse in Carthage, Tenn., earlier this month, Mr. Gore, 51, sought to put the best face possible on his Vietnam half-year, saying he "served my nation proudly."
But Mr. Gore did not always sound so proud of his time as a journalist in the Army's 20th Engineering Brigade.
