NEW YORK - Pakistani Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif announced yesterday that his country, the world's newest nuclear power, is prepared to sign the nuclear test ban treaty.
Pakistan previously indicated it would sign the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty only if India agreed to as well.
Mr. Sharif's announcement, although anticipated for several days, followed a luncheon with Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at which the two agreed to resume bilateral talks on the disputed territory of Kashmir.
