BALTIMORE - Baseball's combative umpires say they will walk off the job on Sept. 2, leaving the game in chaos as the postseason approaches. Baseball's leaders could not be happier.
The collective bargaining agreement between the umpires union and Major League Baseball expires Dec. 31, but tensions have boiled over several months earlier than expected.
Baseball is attempting to gain control over what it regards as a group of renegades. On Wednesday, 57 of 68 major league umpires gave them an excuse to act by voting to resign on Sept. 2, thereby skirting a strict no-strike clause in their contracts.
