RAWLEY SPRINGS, Va. - After sitting on damp ground, leaning against a thick oak, camouflaged from head to toes, insects crawling down the nape of my neck and me being scared to move because a wild turkey strutted about 65 yards away, his wattled neck and head pointing straight at me, I slowly realized . . . Ben Franklin was right.
During the formative years of the new republic, when Englishmen became Americans and other Englishmen fought their cousins because they were ticked off about the rebellion in the colonies, Mr. Franklin wanted the wild turkey, not the bald eagle, as our national symbol.
