A busy day of trading in Major League Soccer netted a solution to D.C. United's most glaring on-field need yesterday as the club acquired all-star defender Diego Sonora from the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.

One of the best right backs in MLS, Sonora, 29, was acquired in a complicated three-way trade involving the San Jose Clash.

The MetroStars were significantly over Major League Soccer's $1.7 million salary cap, and jettisoning Sonora to San Jose helped them get under the spending limit. United is also bumping against the cap, while the Clash have excess room under it. San Jose agreed to count a large part of Sonora's estimated $150,000 salary ...
