Surprising facts can be gleaned from the 1998 Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament's list of record-breaking catches. The year-long tournament actually isn't an organized competition the way a tuna tournament or marlin contest is run. Instead, it's an open-to-all, fish-anywhere-in-Virginia tidal water contest run by the state's Marine Resources Commission. Its director, Claude Bain, is a skilled sport angler who wants the world to come to Virginia to enjoy its saltwater fishing, and if anybody catches one of 25 eligible species that meets a preset weight minimum, he or she will be rewarded with a wall plaque or a wall-mounted trophy. Best of all, it's free.
