Around September 1888, Armand Savoure, a French merchant in Africa, was put up by Arthur Rimbaud, the former poet become like Savoure himself a trader in guns and other things, in the latter's house at Harar (now Harer). In 1930, the year Evelyn Waugh made his way up into the Ethiopian highlands to write about Harar's medieval history, Savoure's memory of staying at chez Rimbaud 42 years earlier was still clear, as he wrote in a postscript to one of his letters:
