Crete's Arkadi Monastery, it is said, is the soul of Crete. This shrine of rebellion from occupation by the Ottoman Turks is on a Greek currency note, and its anniversary, Nov. 9, is observed each year.
Visitors feel the heroism of the 864 Cretan men, women and children who died in the two-day battle in 1866 as Cretans fought for freedom. The monastery was a center of the rebellion.
The monastery is on an open plain in central Crete. Pine, cypress and oak trees and olive groves are in the distance. Gorse grows among the rocks.
