Once again, Eddie Van Halen is determined to move on. For the second time in its 20-year career, the legendary Los Angeles hard-rock band Van Halen has a new front man - Gary Cherone, former lead singer for the Boston hair band Extreme. And just as in 1985, when now-dispatched front man Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth, there's a lot of skepticism over the future of the group, which plays the Nissan Pavilion tomorrow.
Mr. Hagar's firing in June 1996 and his replacement by Mr. Cherone four months later suggests that Mr. Van Halen is also coming to terms with his standing as a 43-year-old guitar god.
