BERLIN - "Berlin is a city that has never been at ease with itself." This observation by Alexandra Richie, in "Faust's Metropolis," her new book about Berlin, captures the uneasy experience of a Jewish tourist wandering through the Berlin streets of vanished ancestors and engaging young citizens.
The city's veneer of normality camouflages a history of horror, a bustling population of men and women desperately seeking to make things "right," forever aware of having to defend themselves for the past and repent for the sins of their fathers.
