While claims and counterclaims on the rebellion in eastern Congo have created an atmosphere of confusion, President Laurent Kabila appears, for moment, to have stopped the rebels cold.
But the leaders of the rebellion, in a highly unorthodox broadcast of their war plans, say they will soon capture the Congo River port of Matadi about 1,100 miles to the west. Such a move would seek to starve the nearby Congolese capital, Kinshasa.
There are also unverified reports that the rebels, ethnic Tutsis also known as the Banyamulenge, are sending planeloads of troops to the vicinity of Kinshasa. And there is speculation that they will set up a ruling council ...
