"Snake Eyes," a negligible exercise in suspense from director Brian De Palma and screenwriter David Koepp, who collaborated impressively on "Carlito's Way" and ostentatiously on "Mission: Impossible," exhausts its powers of invention with the opening shot.
To be fair, this shot is contrived to last about 20 minutes. A virtuoso stunt for the Steadicam, it disguises some unavoidable cuts (a Steadicam magazine needs to be reloaded after about six minutes of operation) while escorting us from the boardwalk in Atlantic City into a cavernous crime scene.
Murder is about to erupt at ringside during a rigged title fight, triggering panic in a boxing arena ...
