Two months after declaring her candidacy for president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, former director for Africa of the U.N. Development Program, has become the top challenger to warlord Charles Taylor in next month's election to return the country to civilian rule.
Opinion polls show her running neck and neck with Mr. Taylor, although neither commands more than about 25 percent of the vote in a field of a dozen or so candidates.
