RICHMOND - Virginia lawmakers recently rolled out the red carpet for Ken Burns, the filmmaker whose three-hour documentary on native son Thomas Jefferson airs tomorrow and Wednesday on Public Broadcasting Service stations.
As Mr. Burns accepted the rare honor of addressing the state Senate, legislators paid scant attention to his gray-haired escort, Gerald L. Baliles, who served as Virginia's governor from 1986 to 1990.
Fame is fleeting for governors in Virginia, the last state where the chief executive cannot serve successive terms.
