Vice President Al Gore this week began to inch out of President Clinton's shadow and even vented anger at the president he hopes to succeed.
Mr. Gore was upset that Mr. Clinton called the New York Times and confirmed his concerns that the Gore campaign got off to a sputtering start.
But the Gore camp also recognized that the incident gave the vice president a rare chance to stand apart from the president.
