The Senate was asked yesterday to take a dramatically larger role in filling Supreme Court vacancies by helping the president choose more suitable candidates.
"Without disparaging the court's current personnel, it is worth noting that seldom are the justices compared to Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louis Dembitz Brandeis or Benjamin Cardozo," Sen. Arlen Specter told the Senate yesterday. The Pennsylvania Republican is a member of the Judiciary Committee.
"The Senate should better fulfill its `advice' function by having the [committee] establish a pool of possible Supreme Court nominees for the president to consider," said a bipartisan resolution introduced ...
