While researching the Civil War campaigns of Confederate cavalry Gen. John Imboden, I came across an interesting article from the Dec. 23, 1894, issue of the New York Times that described the ice-cream incident during summer 1864 in Hancock, Md.
The newspaper reprinted a letter written by Imboden to Dr. William Egle, a historian who was preparing a biography of Andrew Curtin, governor of Pennsylvania during the war.
On June 28, 1864, Imboden had been ordered by Gen. Jubal Early to leave his camp near Staunton, Va., and move against the B&O Railroad in Hampshire and Morgan Counties, W.Va.
