In her day, she modeled hats for the most prestigious designers of New York's Seventh Avenue.
Now Joan Carroll, still sophisticated but hatless, sits surrounded by her senior friends in Wilson Boulevard's Sunrise Retirement Home and reminisces about the days when the seasonal wardrobe wasn't complete without a stop at the local milliner.
Back then, going without a hat in public was about as acceptable as going without clothes.
"I still feel strange when I go outside without a hat on," says Cathryn Meehan, Mrs. Carroll's friend.
"The nuns always said, `A lady isn't properly dressed without a hat and gloves,' and that feeling stays ...
