Russia stokes fire in Cyprus: Air defense system infuriates Turks.(World)

NICOSIA, Cyprus - Russian plans to sell a sophisticated air defense system to Cyprus had brought long-simmering troubles to a slow boil ahead of Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright's stopover on the Mediterranean island yesterday.

Thanks to the efforts of the State Department's latest "special coordinator" for Cyprus, Mrs. Albright was able to announce during her half-hour visit that Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will meet soon to discuss security issues.
