Even men who are serious athletes are unlikely to outrun middle-age spread, new research concludes.
The research, published in the May issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, examined more than 4,700 male runners ages 50 and under to find out if vigorous exercise can prevent weight gain with age.
Paul T. Williams, a scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif., and the study's author, said the research was designed to explore whether middle-age weight gain is a physiological effect of aging or the result of declining activity.
